How does payroll tax filing work?
As an employer, you must withhold payroll taxes from your employees' payslips and remit these amounts to the Belastingdienst.
It's crucial to submit the payroll tax return to the Belastingdienst on time, typically within one month after payroll processing. Payments must also be made within this timeframe.
If you use Employes, the payroll tax filing is entirely automated and usually processed by the tax authorities within five minutes. You can verify successful submission in two ways:
- Log in to the Belastingdienst portal to check the filing status.
- Review the details of a payroll run within Employes.
How to avoid late payments and penalties?
Employes utilizes task management. When you process payroll, a set of tasks is generated, including:
- Paying your employees
- Paying the tax authorities
- Sending payslips to employees
- Exporting data to accounting
If a task remains incomplete within a certain period, you'll receive a reminder email. If it's urgent, we may contact you by phone.
Paying payroll taxes to the tax authorities
Employes provides clear instructions on how to transfer the correct amount to the Belastingdienst, including:
- The amount of payroll taxes
- Payment reference
- Bank account details of the tax authorities
- Payment deadline
You can manually transfer the amount to the tax authorities, but it's even easier to add the amount to a payment file that you can upload to your bank. This file can be automatically generated in Employes.
Payroll tax filing retroactively
Sometimes, you may need to file payroll taxes retroactively, such as for corrections or when initiating payroll processing.Employes allows you to do this retroactively, even up to more than a year back. Our support team can assist you if needed.
